Chew Proof Dog Beds - Kuranda Dog Beds
Some dogs just chew everything in sight—from shoes to toys to their own beds. If your dog or puppy is of the destructive toothy type, you can save yourself some trouble and some money from buying new dog beds over and over by instead purchasing a chew proof dog bed.
For dogs that chew, you would not want give them soft plushy beds or beds with wood or wicker frames. A good chewer can demolish this type of bed in minutes, if not seconds. If your dog thinks his bed is a big teething toy, you need a chew proof dog bed. Not only is this an annoyance, and a messy cleanup, for you, but it can cause your dog serious health problems as he breaks of shards of wood that can be swallowed and lodge in his esophagus or intestines.
How are chew proof dog beds different? Chew proof beds are typically available in steel, poly-resin or aluminum. Most chew proof beds are so sturdy that they can be used indoor or outdoor.
Steel is very durable and will last a lifetime. Aluminum too is very durable. However, if you need a chew proof bed that is easier for you to move, poly-resin is lightweight as well as durable.
Several manufacturers offer chew proof dog beds including Orvis, Dura Dog and Kuranda. Orvis touts a supertough 1,000-denier cordura bed and liner, called the Dog’s Nest. Similarly, Dura Dog offers supertough 1,000 denier cordura lined beds that have rolled corners to resist chewing.
Kuranda protects fabrics on its dog beds with poly-resin sleeves so that the dog cannot find a corner to grasp and bite. The company offers several types of bedding including vinyl weave, which is like that found on lawn chairs. It is very durable for dogs that jump all over their beds. Cordura, also available, is another fabric that is tough nylon canvas. And, like cordura, 40 oz vinyl is also used. The Kuranda beds offer a unique design that tucks the fabric into the protective frame so the dog can’t get at the fabric edges to start shredding.
Patented Kuranda chew proof frames are typically available in aluminum or poly-resin. A chew proof dog bed can run anywhere from $65 to $120+, depending on materials and size of dog; however, you’ll be saving money in the long run by not having to replace the bed over and over. If you have questions as to the durability of dog beds, speak with the manufacturer. Some beds may be chew proof, yet at the same time may not be dig proof if your dog is an incessant digger.
