Orthopedic Dog Beds Provide Greater Comfort For Older And Physically Challenged Dogs

Is your dog getting older? Has he stopped sleeping on the floor in favor of the couch or your bed? Older dogs and arthritic dogs will often seek more comfortable places to sleep as the hard cold floor offers them less and less comfort as they age. Big dogs or small, at some point, they will get older and will find it more difficult to jump up on couches or beds to seek comfort.

For older dogs, arthritic dogs, dogs with hip dysplasia or dogs that are recovering from surgery, orthopedic dog beds can give them greater comfort and help them on the road to healing.

You’ve seen the memory foam commercials for mattresses for people (made by NASA). But did you know that you could provide the same comfort to your dog? Orthopedic dog beds are typically available in memory foam, which provides a restful, comfortable night’s sleep for older dogs and dogs with physical problems.

Orthopedic dog beds provide comfort and are also thought to help prevent and alleviate signs of hip dysplasia or arthritis. How do these beds help your dog? First, like any other dog bed, it gets him slightly off the ground, which keeps older arthritic dogs from getting a chill and allows them to stay more comfortably warm. But that’s where the similarity to other dog beds ends.

The memory foam is made to prevent pressure points. In fact, instead of pushing back at the dog, like a regular bed, the memory foam responds to weight and pressure by instead conforming to the dog’s body. This technology evens out the pressure and keeps pressure from building up in particular pressure points so your dog doesn’t toss and turn, trying to find a comfortable spot. He sleeps restfully and wakes unsore and well rested. (He also has his own perfectly comfortable spot now, so you don’t have to shoo him from the couch or share your bed with him!)

Many people with arthritis use memory foam beds themselves. They typically find this type of bedding, though certainly not cheap, so much more comfortable that they can sleep through the night; whereas, on a regular mattress, they could not.

Memory foam conforms perfectly to the animal’s body. It evens out pressure, and many owners swear that their dogs have shown improvement in range of motion and comfort level almost immediately. In fact, a memory foam orthopedic bed is so comfortable, you might find yourself crawling into your dog’s bed with him rather than the other way around! Your dog provides you with years of unquestioned loyalty. When the time comes that he needs your help to be more comfortable, it’s the least you can do as a thank you for his service.
